This blog is part of the English Grammar Reading Resources series for students and learners. The blog series will cover essential English grammar concepts in a simple, structured, and practical way. Each reading resource will introduce key grammar rules, explain their usage with clear examples, and provide practice activities to help learners improve their grammatical accuracy and confidence.
In this first reading, “Parts of Speech,” learners will explore the eight major parts of speech nouns, pronouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs, prepositions, conjunctions, and interjections and learn how they function within sentences.
English
Grammar Reading: Parts of Speech
1. What
is Grammar?
Grammar
is the system of rules that helps us use words correctly to form meaningful
sentences. It tells us how words function, how they relate to one another, and
how sentences are constructed.
Consider
the sentence:
The
intelligent student completed her assignment carefully.
Each word
performs a particular function:
- The – determines the noun
- intelligent – describes the noun
- student – names a person
- completed – shows an action
- her – indicates possession
- assignment – names a thing
- carefully – tells us how the action was
performed
These
functions are called Parts of Speech.
2.

computer is on the table.
Remember
A noun
answers questions such as:
Who? → teacher, student
What? → book, computer
Where? → Ahmedabad, college
4.
Pronoun
A pronoun
is a word used instead of a noun. Pronouns help us avoid unnecessary
repetition.
Example
Without a
pronoun:
Jiya went
to the library because Jiya wanted to read a book.
With a
pronoun:
Jiya went
to the library because she wanted to read a book.
Here, she
replaces Jiya.

Examples
- He is my friend.

English.
Verbs

- is
- are

- were
- seem

She is
happy.
Why are

A complete
sentence generally needs a verb.

student writes.
The
teacher explained the topic.
6.
Adjective
An adjective
describes or gives more information about a noun or pronoun.
Compare:
She bought
a book.
She bought
an interesting book.
The word interesting
tells us more about the book.
Examples
- a beautiful painting
- an intelligent student
- a difficult question
- a large classroom
- an honest person
Adjectives
can describe:
Size: big, small, large
Quality: good, excellent, intelligent
Colour: red, blue, green
Number: one, five, several
Opinion: interesting, boring, useful
7.

An adverb
gives additional information about a verb, adjective, or another adverb.
It often
tells us:

- When? → yesterday, soon
- Where? → here, outside
- How often? → always, sometimes, never
- To what degree? → very, extremely, quite
Examples

clearly.

complete it? → quickly
The
examination was very difficult.
How
difficult? → very
Important
Do not
assume that every word ending in -ly is an adverb. For example:
friendly,
lovely, lonely
These are
generally adjectives, not adverbs.
8.
Preposition
A preposition
shows the relationship between a noun/pronoun and another word in a sentence.
Common
prepositions include:
in, on,
at, under, above, beside, between, behind, near, from, to, with, for
Examples
The book
is on the table.
She is
sitting beside her friend.
The
students are in the classroom.
He
travelled from Ahmedabad to Mumbai.
Prepositions
commonly indicate:
- Place: in, on, under, beside
- Time: at, on, in
- Direction: to, towards, into
- Relationship: with, for, about
9.
Conjunction
A conjunction
connects words, phrases, or clauses.
Common
conjunctions
and,
but, or, because, so, although, if, while, when
Examples
Jiya and
PJiya are classmates.
I wanted
to attend the lecture, but I was ill.
He studied
hard because he wanted to pass.
You can
have tea or coffee.
Three
very common conjunctions
And → adds information
She reads and
writes.
But → shows contrast
He is
intelligent but careless.
Or → shows choice
Do you
want tea or coffee?
10.
Interjection
An interjection
expresses a sudden emotion or reaction.
Examples
- Wow! That is beautiful.
- Oh! I forgot my notebook.
- Hurrah! We won the competition.
- Alas! The man is dead.
- Ouch! That hurts.
Interjections
are often followed by an exclamation mark (!), although punctuation can
vary depending on context.
11.

12.
Important Point: A Word Can Have Different Functions
A word
does not always belong to the same part of speech. Its function depends
on how it is used in a sentence.
Example:
fast
He runs fast.
→ Adverb
He is a fast
runner.
→ Adjective
Example:
book
I bought a
book.
→ Noun
Please book
a ticket.
→ Verb
Therefore,
students should identify the function of the word in the sentence,
rather than simply memorising lists.
